<span style="font-family: "verdana" , "sans-serif"; font-size: 10.0pt;">How
To Keep Coily Hair Hydrated And Beautiful<span style="font-family: "verdana" , "sans-serif"; font-size: 10.0pt;">
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , "sans-serif"; font-size: 10.0pt;">If you
have coily hair, you likely have very tight curls instead of loose curls or
waves. With such tight curls, managing your hair can be difficult at times.
However, if you start to use the right products, your hair can become much more
manageable and will begin to look even better than before.

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , "sans-serif"; font-size: 10.0pt;">There are
some really good products that are made for the coily hair crowd. Shampoo,
conditioner and defining creme will help hydrate every strand, leaving your
hair moisturized and full of natural bounce and shine.

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , "sans-serif"; font-size: 10.0pt;">Use
Hydrating Shampoo and Conditioner
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , "sans-serif"; font-size: 10.0pt;">When you
have tight curls, using the
right shampoo and conditioning
products is essential. You are going to want to use products that add a lot
of moisture to the hair, especially if your curls normally feel a bit too dry.

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , "sans-serif"; font-size: 10.0pt;">UBH Satin
Crème provides just the right amount of essential oil for those with tight
coils and 4a hair. This
product contains plenty of natural ingredients that support hair growth while
preventing damage and keeping those healthy locks hydrated and conditioned.
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , "sans-serif"; font-size: 10.0pt;">According
to the <span style="font-family: "verdana" , "sans-serif";">International
Journal of Molecular Sciences, “Plant oils have long been used
on the skin and scalp for cosmetic and medical purposes because they have been
found to have many positive physiological benefits. For example, plant oil
application may act as a protective barrier to the skin by an occlusive effect,
allowing the skin to retain moisture.”

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , "sans-serif"; font-size: 10.0pt;">Stick
With a Restorative Leave-In Conditioner<span style="font-family: "verdana" , "sans-serif"; font-size: 10.0pt;">
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , "sans-serif"; font-size: 10.0pt;">For added
moisture, you should apply a restorative leave-in conditioner to the hair. It
is possible to add the leave-in conditioner to your hair after washing out your
usual conditioner.
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , "sans-serif"; font-size: 10.0pt;">Instead of
rinsing out the leave-in option, you can go about styling your hair the way
that you want to, whether you plan on using the diffuser attachment on your
hair dryer or just adding some cream to the hair and allowing it to dry as it
is.

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , "sans-serif"; font-size: 10.0pt;">Add
a Defining Cream to the Hair<span style="font-family: "verdana" , "sans-serif"; font-size: 10.0pt;">
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , "sans-serif"; font-size: 10.0pt;">If you
feel like the curls are always all over the place and sometimes do not look as
good as you want them to look, you should add a curl defining cream to your
hair care routine. Not Your Mother’s Curl Talk is an affordable product that
helps to define those tight coils, accentuating their shape while reducing
frizz and keeping the hair moisturized throughout the day.
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , "sans-serif"; font-size: 10.0pt;">You can
use the defining cream regularly. It is also good to use the defining cream on
those humid days when the weather outside often leads to frizzy hair. The cream
works to prevent that frizz from happening.

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , "sans-serif"; font-size: 10.0pt;">Keep your
coily hair looking its best by using Ultra Black Hair products that are meant for
all hair types including those with tighter curls. The right hair care products
will leave your hair looking shiny, healthy, and hydrated.
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , "sans-serif"; font-size: 10.0pt;">Article written by Sherry Harris - sherry@obsessedhairoil.com Ultra Black Hairhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10933799093496843985noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8109254587360961558.post-24583802136056842622016-06-28T07:35:00.000-07:002016-06-28T07:35:27.161-07:00Deep Conditioning is SOOOO time consuming!
<span style="color: #555555; font-family: "Helvetica","sans-serif"; font-size: 11.5pt; mso-ansi-language: EN-US; mso-bidi-language: AR-SA; mso-fareast-font-family: Calibri; mso-fareast-language: EN-US; mso-fareast-theme-font: minor-latin;">When we tell our clients that to get the best benefit from the Ultra Black Hair Deep Conditioner you need to use a hooded dryer and they say "I don't use any heat on my hair," apparently they don't understand that heat from a hooded dryer is different.

In fact VERY different. The purpose of heat when you deep condition is to improve the condition of the hair. The heat allows the hair to swell open and the product goes inside the hair. This process (when used with a good conditioner) will build on to the hair increasing the thickness of the hair, which is where you get the strength. This process also improves the overall health of the hair by stopping breaking, and improving elasticity.

While hairstyle trends change throughout the decades, the one
constant is hairstyling and product launches being big business. But new
research from Mintel
reveals that natural may be the new normal in black hair care, as
relaxers account for just 21% of black hair care sales and the sector
has declined 26% since 2008 and 15% since 2011, when sales reached $179
million—making it the only category not to see growth.

Mintel's research estimates the relaxer segment will reach $152
million this year, down from $206 million in 2008. Furthermore, in the
past 12 months, nearly three-fourths (70%) of black women say they
currently wear or have worn their hair natural (no relaxer or perm),
more than half (53%) have worn braids, and four out of 10 (41%) have
worn locks.

"The natural hair trend is driving an increase in sales of styling
products such as styling moisturizers, setting lotions, curl creams,
pomades, etc., but the increase has caused the relaxer segment to
decline in sales," says Tonya Roberts, multicultural analyst at Mintel.
"A look at expenditures from 2008–2013 shows steady growth in the black
hair care category for all categories except relaxers/perms."

Shampoo and conditioner formulated for black hair is estimated to
reach $257 million in 2013, up from $211 million in 2008. The styling
products segment has also increased from $220 million in 2008 to an
estimated $268 million in 2013. Meanwhile, the hair color market is
forecast to see sales of $36 million in 2013, compared to $32 million in
2008.
However, when it comes to achieving the perfect look, it seems black
women are willing to shell out top dollar to change up their hair. More
than half (51%) agree that it's worth spending more on hair care
products to achieve the best results while 39% say they like to
experiment with new hair care products.

"Given their passion and love of hair, black consumers represent a
lucrative market for companies. Black consumers are always looking for
new products to try and seeking information about hair care products,"
notes Roberts. "Social networking is one avenue that has helped to
garner trust, empowerment, individuality and pride, as it relates to
hair care. Brands have been born and re-born using social networks."
So what's the appeal of the natural style? Forty-eight percent of
women believe natural or curly hairstyles exude confidence and the same
percentage consider them daring. Meanwhile, 45% of black women think
natural coifs are trendy.
<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">Hi my name is Tia I put a perm in my hair two months ago and now I have a bald spot. Also I put one in my daughter head 3 to 4 months ago. At first her scalp was just dry but now where the dry spot is it's coming out. Please can you tell me what's going on?

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">The biggest problem with relaxers is how they are applied. They are smoothed against the scalp and they go into the pores and they change how the hair cells function. The DNA of the hair cell (the brain that tells the hair what to do) is actually altered when the chemical goes inside the scalp. You need to think of a relaxer as being the equivalent of liquid drain cleaner. It is the same chemical you pour down the drain to eat away hair clogs that you are pushing into your head. You would not take a relaxer and rub it up and down your arm and legs for 20 minutes, but you do it to your head. The reason so many black women are giving up relaxers is because of the damage relaxers cause. In the past we were ignorant to the permanent damage but now with education we are resolving to NEVER allow relaxer chemicals to touch our heads again.
<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">
<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">The change to the DNA can be gradual or immediate. I have had people say to me “but I see fuzz so it is growing back.” The truth is, the fuzz will grow no longer than the 1st notch in your finger (about 1”) then it falls out and starts over. Once the DNA has changed, there is no reversing it. There are a lot of gimmicks on the market that will “claim” to reverse balding but don’t waste your money, they are just gimmicks. To prevent losing your hair entirely, I recommend you NEVER put another chemical relaxer on your hair or your daughters hair EVER again. There are products on the market that will straighten your hair without caustic chemicals and I will gladly share my Product Quick Reference guide with anyone who ask. It outlines how to use my products to achieve straight hair without causing hair damaging.
Hair is a
symbol of beauty and weaves can enhance your natural beauty if your hair is
less than perfect.

Weaves can
be sewn on, fused, bonded and even clipped on.

Bonding uses
glue to attach weave to the hair roots while fusion uses wax or glue to attach
weave to single sections of your hair. They both claim to be removed very
easily and cause little harm but glue in your hair IS harmful. No matter what
kind of glue it is. Glue and hair do not mix!

Fused
and bonded weaves are the worst ways to attach weave.

<li style="color: black; font-family: "Calibri","sans-serif"; font-size: 14pt; font-style: normal; font-weight: normal;"><div style="color: black; font-family: "Calibri","sans-serif"; font-size: 11pt; font-style: normal; font-weight: normal; margin-bottom: 10pt; margin-top: 0in; mso-list: l0 level1 lfo1;">
The
most widely used weaving technique is: Sew on weave which is applied by taking
your natural hair that has been braided in cornrows and the weave is sewn on
the braid.

Keep in mind you
still have to take care of the hair underneath the weave which can be difficult
depending on the option you choose unless it is a clip on lace weave that you
can take off at night so you can maintain your own hair, then reattach the next day.

Bottom line, I don’t
recommend any type of weaves or extensions be put on your head unless you absolutely
have to and when you do, the only hair weave I recommend is clip on.

With all the
talk about cancer in our environment, we all want better products that are
safe. So we are now making decisions about using natural or organic products
and whether to use products that are paraben free.

<li style="color: black; font-family: "Calibri","sans-serif"; font-size: 14pt; font-style: normal; font-weight: normal;"><div style="color: black; font-family: "Calibri","sans-serif"; font-size: 11pt; font-style: normal; font-weight: normal; margin-bottom: 0pt; margin-top: 0in; mso-list: l1 level1 lfo2;">
Organic
products use ingredients that are made without antibiotics, synthetic hormones,
genetic engineering, sewage sludge, or irradiation. There is minimal processing
and no preservatives or artificial ingredients. Organic products have to be used quickly because they won’t last long without preservatives.

<li style="color: black; font-family: "Calibri","sans-serif"; font-size: 14pt; font-style: normal; font-weight: normal;"><div style="color: black; font-family: "Calibri","sans-serif"; font-size: 11pt; font-style: normal; font-weight: normal; margin-bottom: 0pt; margin-top: 0in; mso-list: l1 level1 lfo2;">
Natural
products use ingredients that are Unprocessed. But natural does not mean they
are grown organically.

Which brings
us to preservatives and parabens in our hair products.

Parabens are an old preservative system
that the FDA says you can safely use about .02% in products. Parabens are in
just about every cosmetic and hair product. Having preservatives in our hair products prevents mold, and
harmful bacteria from growing in them, and paraben free can be a safer
alternative.

How many times have you bought a product and used it once then stuck it under the sink and forgot about it? Then when you find it again you take a quick look and smell check, and it seems okay, right?

Mold does not have to be black and it does not have to smell. Bacteria can grow in products and you not know it is even there!

My rule of thumb is: use your hair products within 6 months or throw then in the trash!

The medical term for this hair loss is alopecia.

There are many different types of alopecia. Alopecia can be caused from disease, stress on the hair roots, and medical treatments such as chemotherapy. There are 2 types of alopecia that can be prevented: Traction alopecia and Traumatic alopecia

Traction alopecia is caused by constant tight pulling and stress on the hair at the root. Traction alopecia results from very tight hair styles: ponytails, buns, braids, cornrows and can become permanent if tight hair styles are worn often.

Traumatic alopecia is most commonly caused by improper chemical applications. Think about how relaxers are applied. They are smoothed against the head with the back of the fingers, or the comb. The goal is to get the hair really straight around the face. Around the face is where chemicals are smoothed most. How often have you heard the stylist ask “are you burning?” Burning chemicals on the scalp cause trauma to the scalp. The bad effect is that these chemicals go into the pores of your head and they "change" the hair cells underneath the scalp. The unfortunate thing is that this is a permanent change.

Traction alopecia and Traumatic alopecia are preventable. So to prevent hair loss around the edges, choose hair styles that don’t put excessive stress on the hair shaft and ----Stop thinking that chemicals are Safe and use them cautiously to keep your hair on your head.
<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">What are your thoughts on Ovations Hair Therapy? Is it safe for African American women?

<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">It is not a question of is it "safe" because based on my observation there is nothing in the ingredients list that will cause you harm. I will give you my opinion based on a review of their website.
<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">

<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">Their claim is "thicker and stronger" hair - this is what protein does so what makes them so special?

<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">They incorporate DHT blockers in their products which is supposed to affect the hair thickness from the cellular level. (most Black people thinning is not caused by DHT)

<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">On the ingredients list, there is nothing proprietary or exclusive about their products that would make them work any better than what is already on the market

<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">The products are ridiculously expensive! $33 for a 12 oz bottle (It would have to be gold in the bottle before I purchase it!)

<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">Where are the black people with afro-textured hair in their ads and testimonials?

<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">On the website, the testimonials are NOT from people with type 4 hair (just like Wen, they can't cosmetically improve afro textured hair so it is believable)

<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">

<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">So I would NOT invest in Ovation products because the proof is just not believable.
<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">My hair stylist has relaxed my daughter's hair since she was 5 (12 years) and my hair for over 20 years. An unfortunate disagreement and I'm in search of a new stylist. My daughter's hair is in terrible shape, broken and shorter than ever. She is a teenager and a dancer so her diet and dancing is at issue. After 7 weeks I had a new stylist put in Just For Me Regular relaxer because she thought the relaxers my daughter was getting was too strong. I have very thin hair and a short style with no hair issues. I will however need a relaxer soon. I am reading a lot of your tips reference Affirm, is that a good product? I believe my stylist was using Silk products from GA. I would like to place an order for your products ASAP. What should I order for both of us? I saw praise about your products from a customers comments on the Wen product.
Thank you!
<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Lori
<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">
<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Hello Lori,
Changing chemicals is one of the most damaging things you can do to your hair and your daughters hair! Most chemicals are not the same although they appear to be, but appearances can be deceiving. If you put a different relaxer on already relaxed hair it creates holes all in the hair and causes it to break uncontrollably. Hairdressers are ignorant to this one very important fact. When your hair starts breaking, they blame you for it.
<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Hopefully your hair has not been destroyed by the ignorance of the industry professional.
<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">I recommend you get your hair in better condition before you apply ANY other chemical. That can be done by deep conditioning with my UBH deep conditioner at least once a week and using a good moisturizer (UBH satin Crème) my products will keep moisture in your hair and stop your hair from being dry, brittle and breaking.
<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">As you probably have read, I have not had a relaxer since 2004 and don’t plan on getting another one EVER because they can result in permanent balding and I am not ready to be put out of business. Affirm is the relaxer I used in the past but I recommend you stick with the one you are currently using to prevent your hair from being destroyed. If you still decide to have your hair relaxed, ensure the chemical is kept off your scalp. Do not let them smooth the chemical against your head. Please see my video below on safe chemical applications to avoid further thinning hair and potentially irreversible balding.

<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;"><span style="color: black; font-family: "Arial","sans-serif"; font-size: 10pt;">I came across your website asking about Wave Nouveau. I am a older women so having people compliment my hair is a blessing to me. Have not had a perm in about 5 years with no problems, except my hair is long but thin.... I use Carol Daughters products sometime but expensive, still have not found what works with my hair. I want thick hair along with length without using perms love my natural hair can you help me maintain it? Also how long does the perm stay in my hair? Do I <span style="color: black; font-family: "Arial","sans-serif"; font-size: 10pt;">have to chop it off for all chemicals to be out?
<span style="color: black; font-family: "Arial","sans-serif"; font-size: 10pt;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">Hello Jackie,
<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">Perms are “Permanent” thus the reason we call them "perms." They never wear off your hair but have to grow out or be cut off to rid yourself of them. Your thinning is probably caused by chemical applications smoothed against your head. These products go into your pores and change how the hair cells function. Regretfully, nothing on this planet can reverse that.
<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">UBH products will help improve your hair and you do not have to cut the chemical off your hair, you can just let it grow out. Use UBH products and your hair will become stronger, and thicker which is necessary to keep the hair from breaking and to keep it on your head to add length.
<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif; font-size: large;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif; font-size: large;">UBH products address dry brittle hair that breaks. All of which are external problems. Men with thinning hair problems are generally a result of testosterone issues which is an internal problem. Thinning hair in men has been associated with DHT. And many manufacturers will offer products like Nioxin Shampoo as a temporary remedy. I have done no research on these products so I have no evidence that they work.
<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif; font-size: large;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif; font-size: large;">However UBH products will improve the hair you have but they wont stop hair thinning caused by internal issues.
<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;">I am natural and I only co-wash on a daily basis, I was thinking about using hair polisher for sheen, but people on natural sites have me concerned about silicone keeping moisture from my hair and needing to use harsh shampoos to remove build up, which I think I don't experience anyway. I don't see how it would keep moisture from my hair because my hair gets wet everyday, what do you think?
<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;">Dear Celeste,
<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;">You really have to be careful about what you believe that you find on the internet because EVERYBODY is a hair expert now and they are not speaking from experience. My products, which I use DAILY have had silicone in them for over 10 years and the "natural hair blog" people are wrong about the moisture not being able to get into the hair. If that was the case I would not use them and my hair would not be as long as it is now. I also use only UBH Cleansing Shampoo and it is not harsh at all.
<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">My sister took my 3yr old to a Dominican Salon to get her hair washed and they blow dried her hair and now the texture of her hair is different from what it was. How if possible do I get her hair to revert or close to its original texture? Please help me this is gnawing away at me especially now since she flinches a lot to comb her hair that was once manageable to now be a frizzed out tangled mess. Please help... <span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">Hello Natalie,

<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">My suggestion is to use my Silky Spray moisturizer on her hair to detangle and my Satin Crème moisturizer to smooth her hair texture. I don’t think you will be disappointed. I feel confident that you wont need to press her hair when you use these products.
Actually not all alcohols are bad in hair and skin products. There are 4 alcohols that I personally know of that are creme alcohols that are not drying.

They are:
Stearyl Alcohol, Behenyl Alcohol, Cetearyl Alcohol and Cetyl Alcohol

These alcohol are fatty alcohols that are excellent moisturizers. They are used to bind the oil in liquids like moisturizers to prevent them from separating and also used to thicken products. They have excellent softening abilities and function as humectants which allows moisture to bind to hair and skin.

So no need to fear these, they actually are great for moisture!
I am trying to get rid of the relaxed hair by trimming it bit by bit. Is this gonna work? Another problem I have is that my hair is thinning I think due to braiding because I never give my hair a break from braiding. I also have a small patch at the front which happened when I was taking out the braids. It’s been five months now and my hair is not growing back. Is there a chance that it can grow back or what can you advise me to use?

A: First off, it sounds to me like you are on the fence as to which way to go with your hair. You say that it’s been over four months since you’ve had a perm, but you also say that now you would like to get one. The question I have to ask here is -- Are you really ready to transition from relaxed to natural hair?

The journey from relaxed hair to natural hair is often not an easy one and is a decision that we each must make for ourselves. Obviously, we can’t have it both ways. We either have relaxed hair or natural hair – we can’t have both. So, the first thing you should do is to get real clear about which way you want to go. If you decide that you want to get rid of the relaxer, don’t put another one on your hair!

In fact, many of the problems you have been experiencing with your hair (thinning, bald spots, etc.) are more than likely resulting from the relaxer more than anything else. When you use “perms” the application of the chemical being smoothed against your head is the real culprit. It is no secret that relaxers have been known to be harsh on the hair and promote balding and thinning. One of the problems that result when balding happens with relaxers is that the hair cells change inside the scalp. In a lot of cases this condition is permanent! Some have had success growing their hair back after giving up relaxers, however, others have not.

If you are really wanting to transition from relaxed to natural hair, for many of us the hardest part is making the commitment to the journey. This video may help you make the decison.

To answer this question we need to know two things: 1) the life cycle of your hair and 2) its growth rate.

First, the life cycle of our hair is what controls the amount of time a single hair on our head will grow before it falls out and a new hair grows in its place. For most people that cycle is between two to six years.

Next, you must determine the growth rate of your hair. If your hair is relaxed, the easiest way to determine its growth rate is to measure the “new growth.” This is the section of natural hair that grows from your scalp to the straight relaxed hair between retouches. Typically, relaxers are applied to the new growth every two months. Usually, at those intervals the new growth is about 1” long. This means that on the average, our hair grows about 1” every two months or in other words 6” per year. Some individuals will grow hair a bit faster, others a bit slower.

So how long will it take your hair to grow to your back? Along with many other black women, you may find the hair chart from Thehairfiles.wordpress.com to be a helpful illustration. Let’s assume your hair is shoulder length now and you want to grow it to mid-back length. The distance from the shoulder to mid-back is about 9”. So if we assume that your hair has an average life cycle and growth rate (6” per year), it would take your hair a year and a half to grow the 9” from shoulder length to mid-back length.

Keep in mind, however, that this does not take into consideration any bad experiences you might encounter that could have negative effects on the growth of your hair such as improperly applied relaxers, excessive dryness and brittleness, etc. Remember, for the best result in growing your hair you must keep it healthy. Ultra Black Hairhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10933799093496843985noreply@blogger.com7tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8109254587360961558.post-9598138432670215742012-04-26T07:01:00.000-07:002012-04-26T07:01:53.926-07:00How does Cathy Howse get her "natural/chemical free" hair to look relaxed?Let's start with the tools I use to make my natural achieve the straight look. You will need: Wide tooth comb, Conair Hair Designer blow dryer (see picture below), 8-10 alligator clips, UBH Shampoo, UBH Silky Spray Moisturizer w/ trigger sprayer and a flat iron with a thermostat control.

After I wash my hair with UBH shampoo, just before I towel dry, I section my hair down the middle and clip each section. Since afro hair can tangle easily when wet, controlled handling, putting the hair in clips keeps the hair stretched out, which prevents excessive tangling when it is patted down with the towel. In my book Thinning Edges, I discussed sectioning the hair before it is wet so you can choose either way.

After towel drying the hair, take one of the 2 sections of hair and section it into 4 sections so you will end up with 8 total sections of hair. (I personally prefer to have 5 total section on each side because drying the hair straight is easier with small sections.)

As you section the hair, spray it heavily with UBH Silky Spray from roots to ends, directly at the section of hair.

Comb from ends to the roots to detangle.

After combing out the tangles, twist and clip each hair section. Do this until you have clipped all the hair all over your head.

Using the Conair hair designer blow dryer, dry each section, replacing the clip so the hair remains in sections. (Note: most blow dryers have a comb attachment that can make afro hair poofy. The Conair hair designer has a patented head that holds the hair to smooth it straight during drying.)

Plug in your flat iron and choose one of the hotter settings on the thermostat but not so hot your hair is burning when you touch it with the iron.

Next take small sections of hair and pull the iron from roots to end straight down the hair.

To achieve loose curls, pull the iron from roots to end but turn the flat iron ½ turn as you move down the hair shaft to the ends.

Take a look at our video below and see how Cathy's hairdresser goes through these steps.
After several relaxers were applied, it is now broken off up past her shoulders and so thin I can see her scalp and it is affecting her self-esteem.” After conducting some online research on his own, he called me to ask if Nioxin shampoo will help thicken his daughter’s hair again. Well, as I told him, the answer to this question is – no. Now let me explain.
<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">
Nioxin is a brand of shampoo designed to address thinning hair caused by Dihydrotestosterone (DHT), a male sex hormone that causes hair loss in both males and females as a consequence of changes in the metabolism. Male pattern baldness is caused by the sensitivity of hair follicles to DHT, where the hair follicles shrink causing abnormal hair production. DHT effects the hair follicles ability to absorb nutrients necessary for healthy hair growth. Nioxin’s claim is that it dissolves and removes sebum so the follicles can get the proper nutrition, however, its ingredients contain no medications. Most importantly, any hair growth that may be achieved while using Nioxin is lost again when usage is stopped.

The critical message here is that thinning hair resulting from relaxers cannot be resolved by using Nioxin. Relaxer thinning is caused from a caustic chemical being pushed into the pores during smoothing, which causes the hair cells to stop producing hair at its once normal rate. This is very different from DHT issues where the metabolism is the cause.

Who should use Nioxin? It should definitely not be used on a nine- year old. It was designed to be used on adult males and females with non –relaxer balding issues. Nioxin will not thicken hair that is the result of misapplied relaxer chemicals.
<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">This is a question that keeps coming to me from many of my customers.

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">We have all seen the infomercials and advertisements about WEN, stating that it is good for all hair types. A key feature of WEN’s concept (much like co-washing) is to clean and condition the hair all at the same time by using one product to do both.

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Well, I am happy to give you my OPINION based on my many years of experience with the unique characteristics of afro-textured hair. If you are familiar with my research, you know that primarily our hair is naturally very dry. As a result, we need to moisturize our hair daily to prevent breakage that results from dry, brittle hair.

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">After reviewing the WEN products and overall concept, my OPINION is that WEN products don’t provide sufficient daily moisture to meet the needs of our extremely dry hair type. Also, I believe in shampooing to cleanse and remove buildup of daily maintenance products.

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Again, this is just my “two cents” based on my more than twenty years of research and product design to address the specific characteristics and prolonged health of afro-textured hair.

You may have heard keratin treatments referred to as “Brazilian Hair Treatment” or Brazilian Blowout,” but although the names imply a difference, they are one and the same. Let me walk you through the keratin treatment process.
<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">
First, the keratin (aka amino acid) based solution is “lightly” applied to hair that has been shampooed and rinsed. This solution also contains formaldehyde. In fact, it is the formaldehyde that is the source of much debate, resulting in keratin treatments coming with a warning for women who are pregnant or nursing not to use the product. This is due to the fumes that are released when the hair is flat-ironed at a temperature of 450 degrees, which is the next step of the treatment process. The heating portion of the treatment is key to achieving the straight hair. After the flat-ironing, the hair is re-rinsed with water and styled as usual, which can mean blow drying and flat ironing the hair again. But here’s the real clincher, you cannot wash your hair. Nor can it be put up in hair pins, pony tails etc. because it has to remain straight for 72 hours (3 days).

Although the manufactures say the product is natural, formaldehyde is not natural and, in fact, you may recognize it by a more common name -- embalming fluid! Even the formulations that tout “formaldehyde free” contain “Methylene Glycol” which is another term for formaldehyde. The FDA has issued warnings for the maximum levels of formaldehyde use in products, yet some manufactuers’ solutions far exceed these levels.
In my opinion, keratin treatments are just another example of the hair care industry’s eagerness to capitalize on another product that produces short-term results without consideration for the long-term health of our hair.

For me, the short-lived appearance of keratin treatments does not out-weigh the potential side-effects such as deteriorating hair texture, balding and cancer risks from breathing in carcinogens. My rule of thumb is if my hairdresser has to wear a gas mask to apply a treatment to my hair, then it’s not for me. Nor would I recommend it.

Check out this video experience from a hair care professional that came to me as a comment. I feel it's necessary to share with you.
First, let’s define what they are. Silicone ingredients are either, Dimethicone or Cyclomethicone -- commonly referred to as the “cones.”
<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">From my research about silicones over the years, I have learned that because of their molecular properties, silicones are both porous and resistant to air. This allows them to form a “breathable” barrier on the hair. In other words, silicones provide an outer layer of protection on the hair while at the same time allowing needed products to seep through to the inner hair layers. The unique fluid properties of silicone give it a great deal of slip, and in its various forms it can noticeably enhance the texture and appearance of your hair by giving it the look and feel of silk. Silicone can also help keep the hair from drying out by sealing in moisture without making the hair feel heavy and weighed down.
<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">From my experience with the daily use of silicones in my hair products for almost ten years now, I have personally enjoyed the following benefits:

<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">Easier wet and dry combing
Increased shine and luster
Soft, silky feel and appearance
Keeps hair moist and light
Non-greasy
Sealant and heat resistant
Protects hair from heat damage

<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">I do recommend, however, that when using silicones you should periodically use a clarifying shampoo to remove buildups. Be aware that if you co-wash your hair, (wash your hair without using shampoo), you will experience buildups a lot quicker than if you shampoo. Still, my bottom-line take on this issue is that the “good” results of incorporating silicone products into your hair care routine far outweigh the “bad” opinions.
Wearing tight ponytails on a regular basis where the hair is pulled back causing tension on the hairline can result in hair loss. Unfortunately, hair loss brought about in this manner could be permanent. Typically, this type of damage only occurs where this style of ponytail is worn frequently and for long periods of time such as months or years.

Nevertheless, the ponytail is a hair style that has withstood the test of time. Due to the ease of creating the style and its ability to transcend from casual to formal in appearance, ponytails have remained popular throughout history and across cultures. A major consideration to wearing a ponytail without causing damage to your hair is in the device used to secure it. For example, rubber bands may be difficult to remove and often become entangled in the hair when trying to pull them off. Better options include pony barrettes, Blax bands and Bungee cords, all of which are specifically designed for the pony style.

For me, the ponytail is a great solution for the occasional “bad hair” days that we all have from time to time. The key is to make sure that you pull your hair back loosely without putting too much tension on your hairline and that you secure it with something that is not going to cause breakage when removing it from your hair. Also, if you have little girls, be sure not to pull their hair into ponytails or plaits that are too tight and cause too much tension. This could cause permanent hair loss along their hairline.

If the proper care is taken, ponytails are an easy, do-it-yourself, inexpensive style that can be worn without causing any damage to your hair.
S. They are:

Myth #1 says: TRIMMING helps the hair grow

IF THAT actually worked we’d all have long hair! Trimming has nothing to do with hair growth – it never has – and it never will. Hair grows from the scalp – not the ends. Hair is DEAD. Trimming the ends off cannot send a signal to the roots to grow more hair. Hair is not like a rose bush where you “trim a piece off” and another piece shoots out.

Myth #2 says: that LACK OF TRIMMING will split all the way up the hair shaft.

If every hair on your head is prone to splitting all the way up the hair shaft – trimming is not going to help you any way. Split ends will not stop your hair from growing! That myth is perpetuated by the hair care industry

Myth #3 says: we need to BRUSH our hair to stimulate the scalp and make our hair grow

Ask any white person with a PERM if they brush their hair – They’ll tell you NO! So why should we think we should be able to brush our hair when we have a tighter curl pattern than they do?

Myth #4 says that Hair is Alive –

Hair is not alive but dead! That's the reason it does not hurt to cut it. And remember – something that is alive has requirements that are TOTALLY different than something that is dead!

Myth #5 says – Can’t wash your hair too OFTEN because you’ll dry out your natural oils!

Water is vital for the body– So how can water dry out your hair? It doesn’t make sense. It is not how often you wash your hair that causes the problem – it is what you wash your hair with! If washing hair were a problem –every white person out there would be baldheaded. Because they wash their hair everyday! So it is what you use that can cause you hair to DRY OUT and BREAK OFF

Myth #6 say: Too much protein is damaging

NOPE protein is one of the best things you can do to your hair. Protein must be softened when you use it. But it is a requirement for our hair – in fact ALL hair. Without it – the hair will break!

Myths #7 says: Grease is a requirement for our hair and it grows hair

The scalp does not need to be oiled. Sebaceous glands take care of the scalp. Mineral oil and petroleum found in hair grease coat and block the pores like liquid saran wrap – nothing goes in and nothing comes out. You actually cause dandruff in a number of cases by oiling your scalp

Myth #8 says: It is okay to touch up relaxed edges with a pressing comb

Pressing combs will destroy chemically processed hair! Relaxers were never intended to be used with extreme amounts of heat. Never press chemically processed hair – NEVER. If you see your hairdresser grabbing a pressing comb or even a curling iron that has been heated on one of those little stoves – STOP THEM It will cause you MAJOR breakage!

Myth #9 says: If you let your hair grow forever without cutting and breaking it will grow long enough to sit on

Think about this – if you never shaved your leg hair or you never shaved your underarm hair it wouldn’t grow long enough to braid it WOULD IT? Every hair has a natural life cycle – the lifecycle on your head may be 2 years and others may be 6 years.Some of you may be able to grow your hair past their bottoms – most of you will not. Most sisters just want to get it past your shoulders and they will be happy.

Myths are one of the reasons we have short hair. Use common sense when something sounds suspicious to dispel the myths about black hair.

Cathy Howse
Ultra Black Hairhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10933799093496843985noreply@blogger.com5
