Do WEN Products Work for Afro-Textured Hair?

This is a question that keeps coming to me from many of my customers.
We have all seen the infomercials and advertisements about WEN, stating that it is good for all hair types. A key feature of WEN’s concept (much like co-washing) is to clean and condition the hair all at the same time by using one product to do both.
Well, I am happy to give you my OPINION based on my many years of experience with the unique characteristics of afro-textured hair.  If you are familiar with my research, you know that primarily our hair is naturally very dry. As a result, we need to moisturize our hair daily to prevent breakage that results from dry, brittle hair.
After reviewing the WEN products and overall concept, my OPINION is that WEN products don’t provide sufficient daily moisture to meet the needs of our extremely dry hair type.  Also, I believe in shampooing to cleanse and remove buildup of daily maintenance products.
Again, this is just my “two cents” based on my more than twenty years of research and product design to address the specific characteristics and prolonged health of afro-textured hair.

  2. Thanks for your review I have been thinking about getting Wen products but something was telling it may not work on black hair and I didn't want to waste my money. Thank you again!

    1. Hi Brittany, My 2 cents is I had this question too about using Wen products. I bought the UBH moisturizers and books, but wanted to try Wen, so I did. I use both the UBH and Wen. I think Wen is amazing because I had thinning at my temples and in the back of my air and my hair is so fine it just hung on my head. My hair just touches an inch below my shoulders. After using Wen just once, my hair has volume and fullness like I have never seen even in my 20's and 30's. In my humble opinion everyone should try it and see if it personally works for them. I paid 65 for the complete kit, but you can just purchase the shampoo which is a 6 in 1 product. The kit contains a special comb that keeps your hair from coming out in it as other combs do. It also contains an intense treatment and a shea balm (which I use on my lips though).

  3. I tried WEN and my hair was still very dry after washing. Currently making the transition back to natural hair. Now I mix the WEN with V05 Conditioner. Read it has same cleansing ingredients as WEN and WEN is just overpriced. Basically I'm co-washing with a milder formula. Hair isn't as dry after co-washing but I still moisturize with coconut, carrot, almond and olive oils.

    1. Yeah Kalifa,
Cathy was right about your hair still being dry after washing with Wen. I use her products to moisturize after washing with Wen. I love Wen for t he volume it delivers to my thin hair. It covers my thinning a short spots.

  4. That's such a great thing to hear. I am so happy that I didn't buy wen products, cuz I'm trying to stop relaxing my hair. And like most black women (or men), id like to have untangled manageable hair if I was to go natural. You saved me some and a huge hassel :-)

  5. I love WEN hair care products!!! At first I wasn't convinced that it was for our hair type, but after watching the video and using the Fig WEN, even my beautician was amazed at how soft, and manageable my hair has become since my last visit with her in May. My hair is natural and for the past 14 years I had been going to a hairstylist, because I wasn't able to do my own hair without alot of products or burning it. My husband was amazed when he watched me flat iron my hair WITHOUT adding any products to my hair. My advice to anyone who uses WEN, watch the video on YOUtube first, it's not your average shampoo, but a cleansing conditioner, and there is no build up. I was also suggest that you check to see how much to aply to your hair as a leave in.

    1. I agree Karmen. I also LOVE the Wen products! I started using the fig and also the tea tree after losing alot of hair due to blood pressure meds. My hair returned, but returned better. It is always so soft and manageable. I do however, also moisturize with UBH.
